PRESS RELEASE - Dialysis CUTS

Press Release from NKF (National Kidney Federation)

Embargoed until 12 midnight on 18.8.1014

Kidney charity opposes drastic cuts in dialysis funding

NKF (National Kidney Federation) has today strongly

opposed the proposed cuts of around 15% in the

funding of dialysis services in England from

2015/16.

Kirit Modi, Chairman of the NKF, has written to both

NHS England and Monitor, stating that “Cuts of this

magnitude will have a dramatic and destabilising

effect on services to dialysis patients and the quality

of life of patients”.

He added: “On behalf of the over twenty thousand

kidney patients represented by the NKF, we

demand that these proposals be reconsidered as a

matter of urgency and that meaningful

consultations on these cuts be arranged with the

key stakeholders who form the kidney community”.

The NKF believes that the current proposals (for NHS

National Tariff payment system 2015/16) are not

based on sound evidence, the consultation period has

been rushed and that the impact on the lives of

kidney patients has not been given proper

consideration.

Prof Donal O’Donoghue, who is a medical advisor to

the NKF and is the past National Clinical Director for

Renal services, said:  “The proposed level of

reductions in the tariffs for dialysis   will destabilise

 current provision, prevent improvements in

provision and significantly affect patient care.”

NKF is today also requesting all local kidney patients

Associations (KPAs) in the country to contact their

 local MPs

to inform them of these proposals and to urge them

to write to the Secretary of State for Health to drop

these proposals and engage with the NKF on

discussions which can lead to both more efficient use

of resources as well as improved services to kidney

patients.

End
